Note 05 · Living together

Give shared objects a return point

A shared object is easier to find when its return point is clear and convenient for everyone who uses it.

Choose the return point together

Ask the people who use the object where they naturally finish with it. A place near that point is more likely to work than a technically tidy location at the other side of the room. Try the location for a few days before treating it as permanent.

Make absence understandable

For an object that regularly leaves the room, a small note can say who has it or when it is expected back. Keep the note proportionate to the object and the group. The aim is to remove a search, not to turn an ordinary household item into an administrative task.

Keep accessories together when the object needs them to be useful. An object returned without its case or lead may still leave the next person unable to use it.

Review a repeated search

When the same search happens again, discuss the return journey rather than blaming a person. The location may be inconvenient, the container difficult to open or the expected arrangement unclear. A small change to the shared place can be more useful than another reminder.
