Small systems for ordinary days

Desk & Distance

Practical notes on arranging a desk, carrying less and keeping useful objects easy to find.

An ordinary day contains many small transitions: opening a notebook, leaving a room, packing a bag or finding a cable. This collection looks at the objects around those transitions and offers a few modest ways to make them easier. Begin with one place that repeatedly asks for your attention.

Keep a cable with its purpose

Two similar cables can serve different jobs. A small record of the useful pairing can save repeated trial and error.

Arrange for the day you actually have

The first three notes concern a working surface, a bag and the small collection of cables between them. The remaining readings cover labels, shared objects, paper and a short end-of-day reset. Each can be used on its own.

These are suggestions for ordinary objects rather than a complete productivity method. Keep an arrangement when it removes a recurring inconvenience. Change it when it creates a new one, and leave room for a day that does not follow the plan.
