Note 03 · Connecting objects

Keep a cable with its purpose

Two similar cables can serve different jobs. A small record of the useful pairing can save repeated trial and error.

Record the known pairing

When a cable works with a particular device and adapter, keep a short label or note describing that pairing. Use the names that appear on your own objects. A precise note such as 'desk display connection' is more useful than an unexplained number on a loose lead.

Store for the next use

A cable used daily can stay near its device. An occasional travel lead belongs with the travel kit. Coil stored leads loosely and use a reusable tie that can be opened without searching for a tool; the point is to make the next connection straightforward.

Separate cables awaiting identification from the known set. Otherwise the same uncertain lead may be tested and returned to the drawer many times.

Keep uncertainty visible

If a pairing has not been checked, say so in the note. Similar connectors alone do not establish the purpose of a cable. Keep the original packaging or manufacturer information when it explains that purpose, and avoid turning a guess into a permanent label.
